John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine. Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room. I went to John's Grill with a large group. I was excited to try out this restaurant since I usually see a line walking past it. Inside the restaurant was very large and had multiples floors to accommodate large parties. The staff was incredible and very friendly, but those were the only good things about this restaurant. The food, unfortunately, was terrible. I ordered the filet mignon, and it was honestly the worst steak I have ever had. It was overcooked, but served cold. The meat itself was tough and had no flavor. Hopefully others had a better experience with their meal...

Excellent old school vibe. Exactly what you would want and expect from a steakhouse steeped in history. Service is on point, attentive without being fussy. If you're expecting innovative plate presentation and flavors go elsewhere. If you want a stiff drink and some straight down the middle steak house classics, look no further.

Good steaks! Went for the bone-in. Cooked exactly to my liking which was medium rare, however the meat was on the tougher side. Good flavour. Great customer service. Was too full for desserts. Reasonably priced. I'll be back for more steaks when I am in town.

Questions & Answers

Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders have dined there. Apparently Bernie was a bit cranky, and lost the owners vote. I bet he also uninvited him to his birthday party. Sissy.

Cool place for kids

No. You can dress as nice or casual as you want. I don't recommend sweats.

Did you go online? That's where I would start if I wanted to purchase glasses online.

Contrary to the previous answer, you cannot take Caltrain directly there. You could take a Caltrain to the San Francisco station and then take the MUNI (N- Line). It's a half block from the Powell Street Station. That's how I get there. I would recommend leaving the car at home, not necessarily because of parking but because of the specific area where the restaurant is located. It's a mess right there, lots of pedestrians, lots of tourists, lots of delivery trucks. It's stressful.

Nope. I wore jeans and an untucked dress shirt with a sport coat and was a little overdressed.

Normally yes, but I notice that tonight it is out of order.
